Wounding defendant granted bail over police objection

After rum shop incident…
KENNETH Fordyce, who is charged with unlawful wounding, was granted $100,000 bail on Thursday.
He secured the grant from Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin, over police objection, at Vreed-en-Hoop Court, where he pleaded not guilty.
Particulars of the offence said the defendant unlawfully and maliciously wounded Khemraj Persaud, on February 7, at Jetty Squatting Area, also on West Coast Demerara.
Police Sergeant Sherwin Matthews, prosecuting, had objected to pre-trial freedom for Fordyce, on the ground that he, previously, faced a similar charge.
However, the magistrate, in setting surety, postponed trial to April 15.
The defendant told the court he and the virtual complainant were drinking in a rum shop when the latter borrowed $500 from him.
Fordyce said he, subsequently, asked Persaud for a cigarette but his request was refused and when he failed to get back his money on demand, he broke a bottle and stabbed the victim.
