ONCE again Georgetown is flooded.
When will the powers that be open their eyes and see that the bulk of the problem is when flooding occurs in Guyana during the rainy season.
World climate has changed and flooding is now endemic. Anyone with half an eye can see what the plastic/styrofoam is doing to one of the most beautiful countries I have visited.
May I ask?
Why in a country with an exceptionally hot climate is there a need for styrofoam food containers to keep ‘takeaway’ food warm?
In the United States, Chinese restaurants (and lots of other eateries) use wax coated cardboard boxes which are bio-degradable.
In London (a very cold climate) all the KFC outlets use cardboard boxes.
In Ireland, plastic shopping bags are banned.
When visiting Guyana I have reprimanded taxi drivers for dumping thrash from their vehicles in the canals. I have also had words with young school children disposing of garbage out the windows of their school buses.
I have been ‘cussed big time’ for this but, as I believe, we have collective responsibility for our environment and, as such, I will not give up.
Banning the import of styrofoam/plastic containers by the Government would be a great start.
Using wax coated cardboard containers for food, drinks, et cetera, would reduce one of the main causes of flooding in the Georgetown area.
On a reminiscent note – I was in Guyana in 1986 and had a small plastic container. Many people asked me if they could have it when I was finished with it telling me of the various uses they could use it for.
How times have changed. Now disposable everything is the fashion.
Dis time na long time?
True but now we have gone over the top and shot ourselves in the foot, destroying our environment in the process.
All residents of Guyana, take a pride in your country and your immediate environment. Clean up the trench in front of your property and insist on biodegradable containers. The retailers will soon get the message.
Guyana is one of the most beautiful countries I have visited
