Defending husband…
MARVIN Taylor, the man for whom police issued a wanted bulletin after he, allegedly, shot and injured his wife and sister-in-law, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday. He is accused on two counts of attempted murder and discharging a loaded firearm.
Particulars of one offence said Taylor, of Lot 51 ‘D’ Field, Sophia, last January 26, on Quamina Street, also in Georgetown, discharged a loaded firearm at Aubrey Smith with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him.
Two more allegations against Taylor are that, on the same day, with intent to commit murder, he discharged a loaded firearm at Michelle Richards and Sharon Taylor.
Police prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar, said the accused saw his wife talking to Smith and, after an argument ensued between the two men, shots were fired at the three virtual complainants.
The prosecutor said the two sisters were wounded and, while they were taken to hospital, the accused escaped.
Pindar, successfully objected to bail for the alleged shooter, on the grounds that he may not return for trial and, if released, is likely to tamper with the witnesses.
The prosecutor said Sharon Taylor is still hospitalized in a critical condition and the gun used was not recovered.
Defence counsel Nigel Hughes, claimed that Taylor’s wife is having an affair with Smith and, prior to the shooting, had found the latter in the matrimonial home.
The lawyer said Taylor’s wife pushed him out through a window and he suffered a broken leg.
Hughes said, the day they were shot, the two women were in a car, driven by the accused, when his wife asked him to pass through Quamina Street, where they disembarked and went to talk to Smith.
Defence counsel said, upon seeing his wife in the company of Smith, Taylor told her he had enough and was about to drive away when the other man fired a shot that hit the windscreen of the car.
Consequently, Taylor, who is a licensed firearm holder returned fire, Hughes related, adding that the entire episode stemmed from Smith transferring his health condition to the accused.
Hughes said the accused has a history of torture in his marital relationship.
The cases will be called, again, on February 8.
