Security beefed up at hinterland students dorm

SECURITY improvements to the tune of $9M have been made to the Hinterland Scholarship Students dorm at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Collin Croal, said yesterday that the improvements included additional lighting from the access road, security
grilling around the library and internet rooms on the lower flat, concreting the area in front of the facility, and additional security. Croal said that the improvements were
done on the dorm from savings on the original construction.
The building constructed at $95.4M, which houses 120 persons, was chartered by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs with C. Deokie and Sons being the contractor. Dean and Partners served as the consultant architects, while Supervisory Engineer of the project was Walter Willis.
At the commissioning last September, President Bharrat Jagdeo said that there is “an absolute need for the government to be responsive” by bringing those children who have been successful in the hinterland areas to the centers where they can be allowed to grow, develop and prosper.
The Head of State also empathised with the future occupants of the dormitory, observing that it is not easy to be removed at such a tender age from their families.
“Dormitories don’t replace love that kids can get from kindhearted people; but can bring kids together, and they can have an environment that they are much more comfortable in,” the President asserted.
