THE United Nations (UN) General Assembly has passed a Resolution on October 20, 2010, proclaiming the first week of February every year as World Interfaith Harmony Week between all religions, faiths and beliefs. Guyana is among 29 Nations who were co-sponsors of this Resolution.
The aim of the Resolution is to encourage all States to support, on a voluntary basis, the spread of the message of interfaith harmony and good will in the world’s Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Temples and other places of Worship during that week based on Love of God and Love of the Neighbour, or based on Love of the Good and Love of the Neighbour, each according to their own religious traditions or convictions.
The Inter-Religious Organization of Guyana (IRO) has responded to an invitation from the State and has engaged a wide-cross section of stakeholders from the religious community and other sectors and has begun planning for this event nationwide.
It is against this backdrop that the World Interfaith Harmony Week – Guyana Planning Committee was established and will be hosting a Press Conference today to inform the public on the activities planned for this observance in Guyana.
