Man hospitalised with severe injuries after cutlass robbery

In second attack…

A CUTLASS chopping attack, at Bell West, West Bank Demerara, last weekend, has left a 49-year-old Stabroek Market wholesale fruits dealer in a serious condition at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Doodnauth Ramnarine called ‘Billy’, a father of three, of Lot 35 Alliance, Canal Number Two, also on West Bank Demerara, is suffering a fractured skull and several chop wounds on his head, neck, shoulder, face and ears.
Still writhing in pain from severe injuries, he told the Guyana Chronicle, from his hospital bed, that, on Old Year’s Night, he was returning home from a wake, around 22:00hrs, when he diverted towards where a barbecue was in progress at Bell West.
With him was his son Dhanraj, 20 and, as they were crossing a culvert on Bell West Public Road, they were attacked by three young men, armed with cutlasses, who inflicted the injuries on them and robbed him of money.
Ramnarine said he lost $7,000 and a cellular phone valued $11,000 but, thankfully, his son only suffered minor injuries.
With the help of passersby, they were taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital, from where they were transferred to the GPH and his son was treated and sent home.
The hospitalised man disclosed that, for several weeks leading up to year end, cutlass armed men have been attacking and robbing victims in the same area of his robbery.
He said the December 31 night was the second time he lost money in the same way. On the first occasion, his loss was also in thousands of dollars and reports were made to the Police.
Ramnaraine said suspects have been placed on bail and, on their release, return to the location and commit more robberies.
