Boxing Day burglary defendants remanded

MOHAN Ramkissoon (no address given) was yesterday remanded to prison on a break and enter and larceny charge.
He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which alleged that, last Boxing Day, he broke and entered the bond owned by Noel Bennett and stole booty valued $170,000.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant had secured his storage place before leaving it on December 26 but, upon his return, he discovered some things missing.
The Prosecutor said the defendant was, subsequently, seen by Police, pushing a cart containing the stolen items and all were recovered.
Ramkissoon claimed someone hired him to transport the items and he was doing what he was paid to do, believing that the articles belonged to the person who was paying him for the hire.
He told the Court that, when the Police stopped him, the hirer fled and escaped arrest.    The case was postponed to January 3.
Ramkissoon was the second Boxing Day burglary defendant to be refused bail in the same court.
The other man, Keith Bowen (no address given either) pleaded guilty to having broken and entered the dwelling house of Paul Giddings and stealing a vacuum cleaner worth $60,000.
He admitted having the appliance but said he did not break into the house. Bowen said he was passing the place when he saw the gate open and took the item from in the garage. But, as he was leaving the premises, persons in the neighbourhood chased after him and beat him severely.
The magistrate deferred sentencing him until January 4.
