– Police Crime Chief
POLICE Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday reported that the shooting of former Commissioner of Insurance, Mrs. Maria van Beek is now a cold case.
The Assistant Commissioner said, since the only suspect was killed, the investigations have gone cold and there are no new leads to follow. In a previous interview, he had said that, although several persons were detained and questioned, no tangible evidence was secured.
After being appointed Judicial Manager of the failed insurance company, CLICO, van Beek was shot and wounded on April 16, 2009, while driving along Lombard Street, Georgetown, at about 08:15 h.
She was on her way to work in slow traffic when the lone gunman fled during incessant rainfall.
The shooter escaped on a waiting motorcycle ridden by an accomplice.
Prior to that incident, she had informed the High Court that CLICO (Guyana) was insolvent, as its liabilities exceeded its assets by $11.9 billion.
van Beek was hospitalised here for a while but migrated subsequently.
