– sentenced to four years , fined $1.5M
BERBICE river resident George Denhart, who confessed to a charge of trafficking in narcotics (1 kg 50 grams or 3.3 lbs of cannabis sativa) was on Monday sentenced to four years imprisonment, along with a fine of $1,149,600 which is three times the street value of the drug.
Denhart was sentenced by Magistrate Krishendat Persaud, at the New Amsterdam court.
Failure to pay the fine, Denhart will have to serve an additional eighteen months, as a guest of the state.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said, earlier that day, [Monday 29th November] ranks were on mobile patrol when, in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam market, the Kumaka resident was seen with a black haversack and acting in a suspicious manner.
He was stopped by the police, who then searched his haversack which contained the leaves, seeds and stems of the suspected illegal (ganja) plant.
The twenty-three-year-old man of mixed ancestry, was subsequently arrested, and taken to the Central police, where the charge was laid against him. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
