GFC win 4-team Masters Tournament in Berbice

… beat Patriarchs 3-2 in final
THE Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Masters side overcame an early 2-0 deficit to humble the Rastafari Patriarchs 3-2 in the final of the quadrangular Masters football tournament played over the weekend at the All Saints ground in New Amsterdam.
The Rastas were 2-0 by the 10th minute of the championship game played on Sunday, with former national captain Rawle ‘Overseas’ Jones engineering both goals.
In the first instance, ‘Overseas’ struck an almost perfect in-swinging right-footed corner kick from the left which Royston John helped into the net with his right thigh after the defensc was left motionless in the 5th minute of play.
Within four minutes the score was doubled when ‘Overseas’ lobbed over the defence, and goalkeeper Andrew ‘Docker’ Bright who left his line was beaten, as the ball bounced over and out of the reach of his outstretched hands into the back of the nets for a 2-0 lead.
The ‘Bourda Blues’ reduced the lead after 17 minutes when the Patriarchs defence went to sleep as Ronald Beaton tapped into the net from inside the 6-yard box.
Just before the half-time former national midfielder Terrence ‘Old Head’ Lewis produced the equaliser from just inside the area on the right. Midway into the second half ‘Old Head’ from an almost similar position struck the winner beating the Patriarchs custodian Marlon Long at the near post to seal the victory.
For their win GFC collected the Triple S Taxi Service Trophy while the Patriarchs were presented with the Ali and Sons trophy.
Lewis, who ended with three goals in the Tournament, was the top goalscorer while team mate Bright was adjudged the best goalkeeper.
In the opening games on Saturday GFC disposed of Hearts of Oak 2-0 while the Patriarchs won a sudden-death penalty shootout over New Amsterdam All Stars after the game ended 0-0.
In the semi, the Rastas had the better of Hearts of Oak 2-1 and likewise GFC over the All Stars by an identical score-line. The two-day quadrangular Masters tournament was hosted by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club.
