ON Saturday November 20, 2010, President Jagdeo along with other government officials visited the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus to have a small chat on the plan of getting University of Guyana students to get involved with integration of Suriname and Guyana. They are allowing UGBC students to do a course that is offered at Paramaribo University while their students in the local community of Nickerie will get access to our Berbice Campus University. The main objective to get all of this done is the hot topic of getting the Corentyne River bridge up and going.
This bridge will help integration between these two neighbouring countries: Guyana and Suriname and will benefit everyone in various sectors such as trading, business, tourism, education etc. The main point made to university students of Berbice Campus at the meeting was that the new plan is to involve, “Integration.” Suriname currently has the largest youth movement in the whole Caribbean and our president wants to integrate with Suriname and get involved in trade, economic opportunities, marketing resources, and other forms of integration that can bring about a strong mixed economy with Suriname and Guyana. They have not stated where the Corentyne Bridge will be located but according to their chit chat it will be made anytime soon to start the bilateral movement.
I believe in order to attract potential investors, business sector and persons interested in promoting tourism in Guyana, the Corentyne River bridge should be located in the vicinity of the No.63 Beach which would stimulate more people to invest in tourism resorts and other unique businesses along the beach, which will make Guyana’s 63 Beach, a spectacular tourism destination in the Caribbean.
It would be nice to locate the bridge on an open spot where there wouldn’t be much confusion. Consultants and engineers would have to examine a spot where there is no sinking sand and firm land to make the foundation for this bridge from Guyana’s border to Suriname’s border.
I believe the bridge is vital for bringing more entertainment and avenues for investment and an ideal recreational spot for tourists to hang out in Guyana. The bridge will be built through a joint committee though and the location, height and other measurements will be determined when the decision is made, for its location. The meeting was a brief discussion of what is expected to happen soon between the two neighbouring borders.
I do hope all the plans follow through well and I am very proud to see our neighbouring countries are working collaboratively, cooperatively and with Unity.
