At Berbice Assizes…

Sentence on convicted teenage killer postponed
JUSTICE Dawn Gregory-Barnes, on Wednesday, postponed to December 2, sentencing of 17-year-old Steven Julian, who was convicted of manslaughter at the Berbice Assizes.
The prisoner had been indicted for murder but the Court allowed him to plead guilty to the less serious offence and, at the request of Defence Counsel Charrandas Persaud, will be sentenced when a probation report on his background is available.

Julian, was 15 years old when he unlawfully killed his friend, Keron Caldeira, following an argument at Line Path, Corriverton, Corentyne, on November 2, 2008.
State Prosecutor Dionne Mc Cammon said the convict, in company with Imran Baksh and the victim, was returning home after attending a birthday party and, along the way, Julian and Caldeira fought over a pair of boots claimed by the latter.
Mc Cammon said Baksh parted the two but, near to the yard in which both lived, Julian and Caldeira engaged in another physical fight and were, again, separated by Baksh.
The Prosecutor said Julian proceeded into the yard while Baksh and Caldeira remained outside. However, minutes later, the teen in the dock armed himself with two glass bottles and, once again, began to argue with Caldeira and, after Baksh walked away from them, he heard a scream and, on returning to where the duo had been, he saw Caldeira with an injury to his neck.
The injured Caldeira was conveyed to Skeldon Hospital, Corentyne, where he succumbed shortly after.
The Prosecutor said, in the presence of his stepfather, Julian gave a written statement in which he confessed to the crime, which Dr. Vivikanand Brijmohan said caused the death of Caldeira, from shock and haemorrhage due to a severed carotid artery.
