National Sports Championships begin today

The Education Ministry is going ahead with the staging of the 50th Annual National Schools Championships beginning today as scheduled. The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) had indicated that it was withholding its support for the games in response to the actions taken against three teachers of Queen’s College, who were knowledgeable of Neesa Gopaul’s situation, before she met her demise. The union stated that the Ministry must set right its investigation.
This premiere event, which includes athletics, cycling and swimming, will be held from today to Friday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, with participation from 1600 students and 200 officials from the various education districts.
Sports Coordinator Allied Arts, Nickolas Fraser, indicated that the championships will commence at 6:00 h with cycling and athletics, commencing at the Carifesta Sports Club, Carifesta Avenue. Swimming heats will commence 9:00 h at the Castellani pool, Homestretch Avenue. These will be followed by the opening ceremony at the Guyana National Stadium.
The national championships highlight the abilities of Guyanese youths and aid the realization of dreams of displaying their sportsmanship on a national stage.
This year’s event is being sponsored by Digicel which contributed $4M and was the first official sponsor.
Fraser noted that other entities such as Banks DIH, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and Giftland Office Max joined the bandwagon, ensuring the event’s success.
This support from corporate entities aids the Ministry of Education to effectively carry out the planned events.
The Ministry spends between $35-$40M of budgetary allocations to facilitate logistics, travelling,  accommodation, feeding and establishing games villages for the event. (GINA)
