THE commissioning by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, of a recreational facility and a minibus at the Palms Geriatric Home is indeed testimony to an administration’s programme that will bring modernity to a care regime that is gradually moving away from a tradition of shut-in. There has always been the perception that those who are in care homes have reached the end of their days with nothing else to expect from life – a category for whom being old means waiting for passage to the great beyond.
But the PPP/C government in its wisdom has shown by its many interventions to date that such a view of the aged has to change, since these elders are still very much a part of society, many of whom would have made their contribution to society, and must be treated with dignity and honour that they deserve.
Studies have shown, that seniors who continue to participate in mentally stimulating activities, even in such an environment, such as reading and watching television do survive physically longer, enjoying reasonable good mental health, too.
Thus, with a new facility that will offer such activities as gym exercise, and a library for reading, many of the residents are sure to make use of the amenities bringing much more brightness to their days. One can just imagine the excitement there will be when they will be driven out. It is hoped that whoever drives that vehicle will do so with care, and that charitable citizens can give another vehicle to the worthy cause of bringing comfort and joy this special category of citizens.
So congratulations to this Ministry and the government for such a wonderful and very thoughtful gesture. Folks at the palms geriatric home will now be happier.
