Venezuelan Institute hosts another child protection workshop

FIFTY women attended the second in a series of child protection workshops at the Venezuelan Institute of Culture and Cooperation (IVCC), at Lot 106 New Garden Street, Queenstown, Georgetown. A release, about the Friday exercise themed ‘My Role as a Parent’, said it was organised through the joint efforts of the Venezuelan Embassy, Ministry of Humans Services and Social Security and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Representing the Ministry of Human Services, Assistant Chief Probation Officer, Ms. Marva Williams spoke on teen social problems, domestic violence and the role of parents.
She facilitated an interaction amongst the participants that allowed for free communication and the women in attendance related personal issues that were affecting them.
The release said the participants, described as being unaware of their rights, were encouraged to visit the Ministry to seek help, counselling and guidance.
The IVCC not only played an integral part in organising the session but also took the initiative in encouraging those who were present to seek further assistance from the Ministry.
The release said IVCC plans to continue the workshops and one will be conducted later this year to conclude the series.
The first was led by Williams and Ms. Doris Roos, Head of Child Protection Unit at UNICEF and IVCC hopes to arrange one more series in 2011, in collaboration with the Ministry and UNICEF, the release informed.
