DAVID Khan edge out Learie Webster on the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreaker system to secure his first win of the year. Both players ended on seven points, but Khan had the better average on the tiebreaker system. Learie Webster who led the tournament for most of the way suffered a crucial defeat to Errol Tiwari in his final game, thus placing him in second, while Errol Tiwari took the final podium position. The players qualified for the National Chess Championship are; David Khan, Learie Webster, Errol Tiwari, Kriskal Persaud, reigning National Junior Champion Ron Motilall, Frankie Farley and Taffin Khan.
The seven players will challenge the National Senior Champion Wendell Meusa in a double round robin tournament, which is scheduled to start in two weeks’ time.
Suhai Feng who played excellent in the first half of the tournament, suffered back-to-back losses to David Khan and Ron Motilall and failed to make the final seven.
The reigning junior champion Ron Motilall is the lone junior to qualify. The final points standing: David Khan and Learie Webster seven points, Errol Tiwari six and a half, Kriskal Persaud and Ron Motilall six points each, Frankie Farley five and a half, Taffin Khan, Shiv Nandalall, Loris Nathoo, Ryan Singh, Suhai Feng, Glenford Corlette and Carlos Petterson five points apiece. Raan Motilall four and a half, Alexander Duncan and Daryll Calistro four points apiece and Michael Pereira, Videsh Shameer and Nowrattan Persaud ended on three and a half points.
