… Fruta Conquerors advance to final four
BV/TRIUMPH UNITED (BVTU) looked the part Thursday night when they sent a tired-looking Bakewell Buxton Stars packing after a commanding 2-0 victory in the last quarter-final match of the third Mackeson Stout/Digicel-sponsored Sweet 16 football tournament at the Plaisance/Industry Community Centre ground.
In the first match of the evening, Fruta Conquerors set up a final four date with BVTU United which is set for tomorrow, as they defeated Golden Stars out of Golden Grove 3-0.
Many thought that the tournament’s host team who lost the services of first-choice custodian Seon Griffith the previous night, courtesy of a broken forearm sustained in an encounter against the Guyana Defence Force, would have come out battling against their East Coast counterparts with all guns blazing.
Instead, it was the eventual winners who came out with guns blazing at their opponents who looked a tired unit before the lemon-time whistle of referee Stanley Lancaster was blown.
Shawn Daniels capitalised on Bakewell Buxton Stars’ lackadaisical approach to send his team – who lost their first round match to the now disqualified Flamingo team – into the lead in the 17th minute which they maintained up to halftime.
The second half saw Bakewell Buxton Stars looking for the equaliser but they were denied by some strong defence work by the BVTU team, while their strikers Jollyan Fraser and Neville Gulliver were guilty of over-dribbling the ball on numerous occasions while their teammates were free in open spaces.
A lapse in the midfield by Ken Garnette saw BVTU’s Ronnel Gordon pick up a loose ball midway in Buxton’s half and make a sprint to goal, before beating the custodian Kelvin Assanah with a well-placed shot to his right in the 70th minute.
Despite some Herculean efforts from Rawle Fredericks, Bakewell Buxton Stars, who earlier in the day were named the standby team for the 21st Kashif and Shanghai football tournament, found it difficult to find the back of the net and made a graceful exit from the tournament.
Travis Hyman (39th), Eon Alleyne (63rd) and Collin Edwards (90th) were the goalscorers for Fruta Conquerors in their 3-0 win over Golden Stars who have set up a semi-final clash with BVTU tomorrow, with BK International Western Tigers facing Santos in the other semifinal
