Vincentian Mayers takes gold after Nigerian disqualified

NEW DELHI, India,  (CMC) – Vincentian sprinter Natasha Mayers has been awarded gold in the women’s 100 metres after Osayemi Oludamola of Nigeria was disqualified late Tuesday for a positive drugs test.

The 31-year-old Mayers finished second to Oludamola in last Thursday’s final with England’s Kathryn Endacott claiming bronze.

However, Commonwealth Games Federation authorities here confirmed that the 24-year-old Oludamola had tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexanamine.

“On October 11, 2010, the provisional hearing for Oludamola ruled that the provisional suspension of the athlete would continue until the result of her B sample was received,” said a statement by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

“The athlete tested positive for the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine on October 7. The B sample test has now been received, confirming the result of the A sample test.

“The federation court determined that Oludamola had committed an anti-doping rule violation and that she be disqualified from the Games and all her results at the 2010 Commonwealth Games be nullified.”

Mayers is now the third winner of the event in the latest twist to what was a controversial event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The race was originally won by Australia’s Sally Pearson but she was disqualified after it was determined that she had been responsible for a false start.

It meant that Oludamola was promoted to gold with Mayers taking silver.

Another Nigerian athlete Samuel Okon, who finished sixth in the 110m hurdles, also tested positive for the same banned stimulant.
