With Charity relocation continuing…
CHAIRMAN of the Local Government and Co-ops Committee of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Pooran Persaud, has announced that only makeshift stalls will be allowed for vending on the old market tarmac North of Charity Public Road.
One of three Councillors, including Mr. Francis Darchiville and Mr. Fizul Bacchus, responsible for overseeing the relocation of sellers, from the public road shoulders to the new $20M facility in front of Pomeroon Oil Mill, Persaud said the exercise has gone smoothly.
But, when he inspected the area on Monday morning, he saw some still vending on the site from where they are being removed, although it was cleared last Thursday by Ministry of Public Works employees.
Persaud said 25 vendors drove their vehicles, at around 03:00 h Monday morning, onto the place and set up stalls, despite orders for their removal, from Charity/Urasara Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and he demanded that they comply by afternoon.
However, when the Guyana Chronicle visited, both shoulders of the road leading into Charity were clear and there was less congestion on the Essequibo Coast thoroughfare.
Some vendors have taken up positions on the new tarmac but there was less business activity amongst them because the route leading there was being occupied by persons selling clothing.
Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Kenneth Persaud said people must vend in a very orderly manner at Charity and he wants to ensure that road shoulders and Government reserves are not utilised illegally.
On Mondays, Charity Market is one of the busiest places, where farmers sell their produce and hundreds of shoppers also go to buy groceries and other household items.
Charity is also a gateway to Pomeroon, North West District, the Atlantic Ocean and Venezuela.
