PRESIDENT of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) Mr. Vic Fernandes yesterday met President Bharrat Jagdeo as part of the union’s dialogue venture with the national and regional media on issues affecting the Caribbean. The CBU President was accompanied by CBU Secretary General Mr. Patrick Cozier and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Communications Network (NCN) Mr. Mohammed Sattaur.
Cozier told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the focus of the dialogue will be on digitization and digital transitioning, intellectual property and the harmonization of regulation across the region.He said President Jagdeo was encouraged by the CBU’s areas of interest and is conscious of all the developments taking place.
“We are satisfied that his thinking is in fact a move in the right direction,” Cozier said.
The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) was formed in 1970 with a view to stimulating the flow of broadcast material among the Radio and Television systems in the Caribbean region.
CBU is the only Pan-Caribbean medium, reaching over 4.8 million people in the Caribbean and millions of others extra-regionally functioning in both an advocacy and representation role.
As a regional institution, it facilitates discussion and analysis that assist in policy formulation on major integration issues.
The member territories and associate member territories of the CBU include Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, France, French Guyana, Germany, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, the Netherlands, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, United States and the US Virgin Islands.
NCN is Guyana’s main member in CBU. Prior to meeting with the President, the CBU officials visited the media entity and engaged in several discussions on the context in which the Guyanese media operate.
Fernandes and Cozier also intend to meet with regulations and public policy decision makers on dialogue of a similar nature.
