In Region Three…
CHAIRMAN of Region Three (West Demerara/ Essequibo Islands), Mr. Julius Faerber, has reported that the $231.7M capital works programme is progressing satisfactorily and is expected to be completed by mid-October.
It is about 75 per cent complete, he told the Guyana Chronicle, referring to efforts towards further enhanced infrastructure in different areas, to assist in improving people’s livelihoods within the Region.
Faerber said, earlier in the year, a setback in the tendering process was a major challenge, due to the death of former Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr. Winston Davidson, because all current projects had been advertised and contracts awarded.
Faerber said $40M was allocated for drainage and irrigation (D&I) and other undertakings include extension to schools and rehabilitation of roads.
He said six bridges, costing $18M, will be constructed at Meten-Meer-Zorg, Wakenaam and Morashee and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) recently put to tender the rehabilitation of the wooden bridge at Hermitage, East Bank Essequibo.
Faerber said, of the three roads scheduled to be rehabilitated, two are on Masjid Streets in Zeeburg and Stewartville.
He said, during July/August, restoration was done to eight schools at a cost of $20M but the Vreed-en-Hoop Number Two, Bagotville, Jasso, Anna Catherina and La Bagatelle nurseries will all undergo repairs.
Zeeburg Secondary also required minor repairs and work was done to extend Kawall Primary; repairs done on the sanitary block at Aliki Primary and $9M is to be spent on furniture for schools.
Faerber said, in the health sector, $6M will be expended on the construction of a waiting area at La Grange Health Centre and centres at De Kenderen, Parika, Louisiana and Leguan received attention, too.
He said $15M in contracts were awarded for the purchase of operating tables, dental chairs, ultrasound machines and sterilisers, among other requirements.
Additionally, other major infrastructural jobs continuing include the erection of a new Magistrate’s Court and a new Secondary School, both at Leonora, facilitated by the Ministries of Home Affairs and Education, respectively.
