Similac Infant Formula recalled by US-based manufacturer

–    after specific batches found ‘contaminated with insect parts’
THE Government Analyst Food and Drug Department is advising the public of the voluntary recall of Similac Infant Formula by the manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories Sturgis, based in Michigan, United States.

This voluntary recall was made by the manufacturer after investigations revealed that it was ‘contaminated with insect parts’ which could be harmful to those infants who will consume it. However, doctors have also said that chances for serious illness are slim in babies who drink the formula containing bug parts, a release from the F&D department stated.
The recall could possibly affect up to five million Similac infant formulas sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean which includes Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers and in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans, the release added.
The formulas bearing the following batch numbers are said to be insect contaminated.-    87932T20

Also included in the recall are Similac powder products with a “T2″ or an “RB” in their lot numbers.
Consequently, the F& D department is calling on all importers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers to refrain from offering the product for sale.
It further advised that officers will be visiting Points-of-Sales and will seize and remove the contaminated batches.
The department alluded to the Food and Drug Act (Chapter 34: 03 Part 11, Section 5) which states in part that formula, as a food, is unfit for human consumption if it is adulterated or insanitary.
The definition for adulteration also includes the containment of whole or insect fragments.
It was however noted that the Abbott liquid formula is not part of the Similac recall.
