NERON Yarris, 30, of 54 Fifth Street, Alberttown, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and failure to stop and render assistance.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on June 28, on Mandella Avenue, he drove motor car PKK 5540 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Bertrand Edwards.
Also, on the same day, the defendant failed to stop and render assistance after the accident. He pleaded guilty to this charge and was represented by Attorney-at-law Ms. Sonia Parag.
The lawyer argued that her client did not drive dangerously and that the deceased was riding his motor cycle with scotch tape on the light. She said it was because of the scotch tape her client was unable to see the light on the motor cycle.
Ms. Parag requested reasonable bail for her client on the ground that he is not a flight risk.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, had no objection to bail and did not give details on the facts of the case.
Yarris was fine $40,000 or two months imprisonment for the charge of failure to render assistance. He was put on $200,000 bail on the other charge and the matter was transferred to another court for September 23.
