‘Giant’ fined $35,000, must do community service

Kwakwani Fund Day incidents…
BURCHELL Simeon nicknamed ‘Giant’, of Kwakwani Waterfront, Berbice River, was yesterday fined a total of $35,000 and ordered to do two months community service.
The penalties were imposed by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson after the defendant pleaded guilty to three offences.
The 33-year-old man has to pay $10,000 and do the community service for being in possession of one and a half grammes of cannabis (marijuana) on August 1, at Third Phase, Kwakwani.
For assaulting Police Corporal Terrence Williams, while the peace officer was acting in the execution of his duties, Simeon was made to pay a $10,000 fine and another, of $15,000, for disorderly behaviour, all on the same day.
Defence Counsel Adrian Thompson told the Court Simeon regrets what happened on the Village Fun Day.
The lawyer said the father of three was under the influence of alcohol and unaware he was dealing with a policeman, to whom he apologised.
