REIGNING DJ Stress T20 Festival champions Universal DVD Berbice Titans maintained their supremacy over Hotel Tower New Line Cavaliers (NLC), when they defeated them by six wickets in the supporting match of the Clash of the Titans at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, yesterday.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike on a fast track, NLC were shakily placed on 33-6 in the seventh over of their innings, thanks to the bowling of Michael Newland (4-15) and national fast bowler Keon Joseph who took 2-20, before they were bowled out for 79 from 19.1 overs.
Solid batting from Renwick Batson who struck three fours and one six in his top score of 31, guided Berbice Titans to 81-4 from 14 overs, to complete their second win over the Canal Number Two team in as many months.
Andrew Lyght Jr 8 (1×4) looked good when he pulled the first ball from Newland through mid-wicket for three, followed by a four through the same area off Joseph, who knocked back his off stump with the next delivery.
Cowen Ismond (3), Orin Forde (0), Chabiraj Ramcharran (0) and skipper Gajanand Singh (5) all perished to the combination of Newland, who extracted pace out of the wicket, and Joseph,
Andre Percival (7) clipped Newland over mid-wicket for four, rolling back his days as a national batsman, before he was caught by Anthony Bramble off Newland, leaving NLC on 33-6.
Chien Gittens (18) was joined by Ishwar Singh (0) and they added 23 for the seventh wicket, with Gittens hitting skipper Eugene La Fleur for a boundary in his top score of 18, before he was run-out by a direct hit.
It was La Fleur who had ran-out Gittens, removing Avenash Sookdeo (3) in the same way, while Ishwar Singh was caught by Rajiv Ivan at long off, but some lusty hitting by Balram Samaroo 12 (2×4) and Anthony Ifill 1* helped push NLC who won the DJ Stress Festival twice last year, to 79 before they were bowled out in the final over.
Needing to score 80 for victory, the Titans raced to 24 with Renwick Batson hitting Samaroo over long on for the first six of the match, before Bramble (5) was bowled by Percival off the first delivery of the fifth over.
Batson was joined by Anthony D’Andrade and even though he struck two more fours, he was caught by Ismond off Percival, followed by the quick demise of Keith Fraser 6 (1×4) and D’Andrade (12), leaving the Titans on 60-4 in the 12th over.
It should have been 60-5, but Gittens grassed a skier off Ranga Latchana when he was on four, with the batsman responding with a four through the covers off the same bowler, while La Fleur, who was unbeaten on 9, finished the game with a four to third man off Forde, as the Titans ended on 81-4 off 14 overs.
Percival and Forde ended with two wickets each for 13 and 32 runs respectively.
