MHSSS reaffirms stand on domestic violence

…in the wake of the stabbing of a Cummings Lodge housewife
The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has once again reaffirmed its position on the issue of domestic violence in the wake of the recent assault on Nanda Latchman by her husband of 19 years, Brian Latchman, on Sunday.
Administrator at the Ministry of Human Services, Ms.Hymawatti Lagan, pointed out that representatives from the Ministry monitor cases of domestic violence and provide services and counselling to all of the parties involved in these incidents.
“Even if the individuals have moved to other regions across the country, we find them through our offices located in these regions,” Lagan said.
Ms. Lagan indicated that in order to effectively handle cases of this nature, there needs to be a partnership between the Government agencies and NGOs.
She said, “The Ministry cannot stand alone to do all of the work, there needs to be collaboration.” Lagan added, “We give as much support as we can.”
In encouraging citizens to become involved in the process of eradicating domestic violence, Lagan said, “We need to be aware of instances of these acts, persons need to bring it to our attention and to report cases and seek help.”
Emphasizing the importance of recognizing the early signs of a tendency towards violent behavior in individuals, she said, “No one should encourage that behavior and endure torment.”
“I am calling on organizations and NGOs to render their support to the Government mechanisms to eradicate the problem of Domestic Violence,” the Administrator advocated.
On the morning of August 15th, 2010, Brian Latchman, a resident of Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme, on the East Coast of Demerara, allegedly stabbed his wife, Nanda Latchman and set their house on fire.
Mrs.Latchman was admitted to the Female Surgical Ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing a stab wound to her left shoulder, resulting in a punctured lung.
She has since been released and is staying with relatives until she can return to her home.
Still in police custody at the Sparendaam Police Station, Brian Latchman is facing charges of attempted murder.
