Armed bandit robs Berbice businesswoman of jewellery

A lone bandit is alleged to have robbed Berbice businesswoman Nazmoon Ali, alias Data, of a pair of gold bangles and a wrist watch valued $150,000.
The daring act was committed at the business premises of M. Ali and Sons located at Main and Pope Streets shortly after 19:00 hours on Monday evening.
At the time of the incident, the proprietrix of the supermarket was seated at the back of the building in the storage bond which also houses the wholesale department.
Reports revealed that an identifiable man, armed with a gun, jumped over the concrete and wired fence about three metres high (10 feet) and demanded the jewellery.
Ali, whose husband, had gone to the mosque, in observance of Ramadan [the Islamic month of fasting], had difficulty in removing the jewel from her right hand, during which time she was gun butted by the intruder, who forcefully removed the articles , before fleeing in a western direction.
The woman was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and sent away.
Meanwhile, the police are continuing their investigations into a robbery allegedly committed by a 16-year old pump attendant employed at M. Ali Gas Station, Lot 13 Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice, who had swindled his employer of $1,100, 700, after collecting the money from a fuel purchaser.
The fuel station is a branch of M. Ali and Sons supermarket at Main and Pope Streets, New Amsterdam.
Feroze Ali, called Sammy, manager for the multifaceted business which includes the gas station and supermarket, related that the missing amount was from the sale of 16 barrels of gasoline, which was purchased on Sunday, by a customer who resides along the Berbice River.
‘The customer, he said, would visit New Amsterdam twice monthly when he would order and uplift fuel, but would pay for it later on the said day.’
However, having delivered the items, the customer returned, and paid the pump attendant who started to work six weeks ago.
The teenager, he said was recommended by a known individual as the grandson of his reputed wife.
Ali said, the gas station has four attendants that work on a 12- hour shift with two for each shift.
‘However since it was a weekend one pair of workers decided to work throughout the 24 hours so that the other two could get a day off.
The businessman said when his father, Mohammed Ali, made checks on the business premises at 05:00 hours on Monday, both employees were on duty, but when he arrived an hour later the suspect was not at the location.
Ali said,  checks were then made on his premises  to determine whether the monies were in the safe place, as was expected, but discovered that it was not so.

Having inquired about his employee’s whereabouts, Ali said, he was told that he had gone to his grandmother’s home.
Checks there revealed that he had visited, but had left, leaving his cellular phone.
The matter was reported to the Central Police Station where ranks are investigating.
Meanwhile, police sources disclosed that several checks were made at the home of the lad’s mother at Mon Repos, but without success.
