GOVERNMENT through the Office of the President has approved three contracts that will see rehabilitation works done to the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court and bleachers to the Ituni Playfield.
Last week Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo made the announcement that the sports facilities in Region Ten will be enhanced at the Mackenzie Sports Club where a $1.8M contract was awarded to A and S Contractors for the asphalting of the MSC basketball court, while the construction of a 65 feet long bleacher for spectators was awarded to Hilton Lord to the tune of $905,800.
At Ituni the contract of $2,000,018 award was won by Alternative Contractors for the bleachers at the Ituni Playfield.
Earlier this year the Mackenzie Sports Club Management Committee was able to complete the rehabilitation of a section of the bleachers which could now accommodate some 140 persons comfortably as it sought to improve the spectators watching of events at the main basketball court in Mackenzie, Linden.
Secretary of the Mackenzie Sports Club, Rawle, told Chronicle Sport then that the pulling down of one section which was in dire need of repairs, was utmost on the minds of its administration.
After the completion of that first pavilion Blair said “this is an ongoing activity at the MSC and what you are seeing now are projects that were planned for probably more than a year, but probably because of broken promises from sponsors, individuals and business people it could now come to light.”
The MSC Secretary informed that the building of the bleachers was one undertaken solely by the MSC noting “actually this bleacher is basically on the back of Mackenzie Sports Club. We have not been given any assistance from no corporate sponsor or no business entity. The material cost is way over $250,000 and we are not finished as we would be putting on some paint and do some more finishing to some areas.”
When further questioned about any assistance received from corporate bodies then, Blair said “the only assistance we had is some assistance from the Linden Amateur Basketball Assocaition (LABA) in the form of the Organizing Secretary (Ashton Angel (Jr.) and the President (Abdulla Hamid) giving us some assistance.”
He related that the MSC received some materials from Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo about two years ago and those materials were used while the rest were purchased.
When quizzed on complaints in general from the members of the public on the state of the toilets at major events and other repairs that seemed necessary MSC Secretary Blair was quick to point out “we have been doing some general repairs throughout this facility.
We have been lambasted for things that are not true. For instance they have been speaking about the toilet facilities which are not true.”
