Capital works in Region Two ahead of schedule

Engineer attached to the Region Two Administration, Shamesh Bridgemohan, has reported that the region’s capital works programme is ahead of schedule and is some 80 per cent complete. Presenting a repot to Regional Vice Chairman Mr. Vishnu Samaroo and members of the Agriculture, Drainage, Irrigation and Works committee, Bridgemohan said 20 projects in the drainage and irrigation department are completed, while another six are under construction.
According to the engineer, some 20 rods were upgraded across the Essequibo Coast, and construction works completed on a building housing the offices of the Regional Chairman, Regional Executive Officer and Boardroom at Anna Regina.
According to Bridgemohan, construction and electrical works are still ongoing at the Suddie and Charity Hospitals while mobilisation of materials is still in progress for the construction of a primary school at Bara Cara in the Akawini savannah.
He said rehabilitation is also in progress on several primary, secondary and nursery schools across the region.
The engineer said those works will be completed in time for the new school term which begins in September.
The Region Two Administration is spending some $285M this year on its capital and current projects.
Under Drainage and Irrigation, some $110M is being spent on construction of irrigation checks, tail walls, box culverts, and timber revetments to improve agricultural yields, drainage and irrigation facilities, and access to farm lands.
Under public works, another $40M is being spent to upgrade roads to improve access, while under land development, a sum of $22M is being spent to upgrade more streets across the region.
Under education, a sum of $25M is being spent for the construction of a school at Martindale and Annex to Akawini primary school to improve accommodation and educational facilities for students and teachers.
Meanwhile, under health, some $23.5M is currently being spent for the construction of a vision centre at Suddie and rehabilitation works on the Suddie and Charity Hospitals.
More bridges are being constructed under the capital programme at Suddie Hospital and Johanna Cecilia Secondary School.
The Administration is also purchasing furniture, and other equipment for schools and offices under its current programme.
