Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai on Sunday officially opened the Upper Mazaruni District Games at the Kamarang Community Ground, Region Seven. The sporting event will be held over a five-day period and includes football, archery, athletics and volleyball.
Demonstrating Government’s commitment to the advancement of sport, especially in hinterland communities, Minister Sukhai, on behalf of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, presented the President of the Upper Mazaruni District Sports Committee, Rudolph Wellington with $400,000 and five bags of rice for the event.
Also in attendance at the event were Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Colin Croal, Region Seven Chairman Holbert Knight, its Vice-Chairman Amrita Thomas, and Kamarang Toshao Norma Thomas.
Minister Sukhai emphasized, “Government is pursuing an aggressive youth programme which includes sports, and I am sure as we move together in unity, that this Upper Mazaruni district will see greater levels of interventions in sports.”
She noted that sport plays an integral role in children’s education and that all participants are winners.
Knight highlighted that the opening march past was well executed and commended the committee for organising the event.
