Sophia Artists Group to host annual exhibition later this month

The Sophia Artists Group is set to launch its second annual Literary, Visual and Performing Arts and Craft Exhibition under the theme ‘The Pride of Our Community’. This announcement was made yesterday at a press conference at the Pattensen Multi-Purpose Community Centre in Sophia.
According to Vice President of the Group, Louis Jordan, the exhibition, which will run from  Friday 13 to  Saturday 21 August, 2010, will showcase craft and other artistic pieces made by younger members of the community, aged eight to 16.
He said, “These children have become enthusiastic about art, some have done it in school but had never participated in an exhibition before.”
Jordan pointed out that, in addition to the artistic displays, there will be a cultural segment where each ethnic and social group within the community will make presentations in song, dance and drama.
The young participants in the exhibition received lessons from Trevor Thornhill, art teacher and member of the Sophia Artists Group.
The final night will feature an open mike event, giving the DJ’s in the community to perform and showcase their talents and abilities.
Jordan indicated that the theme chosen for the event is representative of the pride and satisfaction felt for the community and the talent coming out of it.
He added, “At our previous exhibition, we created history as we were the first community to exhibit its art and craft within the community.”
One young participant, Nocesy Leitch, expressed his delight at being able to contribute to the exhibition.
He said, “I am happy to be doing this, I spend a lot of time working on my craft at home and at the community centre.”
