Two young men lost their lives on Saturday night in yet another tragic vehicular accident.
Deoram Choonilall, 19, and his neighbor Preminand Ramnarine, 30, were killed when Ramnarine lost control of his car, hit a lamp post and ended up in a canal at Leonora on the West Coast Demerara. The two victims, along with Choonilall’s older brother, Chetram Choonilall, 20, were returning from a relative’s wedding in Uitvlugt when the accident occurred.
According to Deoram, Choonilall’s grieving father, upon returning home on Saturday night at 22:30 hours, he observed several persons gathered at his residence at 13 Back Street, Ruimzeight, West Coast of Demerara, and he was informed that two of his sons were involved in an accident just minutes before.
Mr. Jailall Choonilall said that his younger son, Deonarine, was in the passenger side of the car while Chetram was in the back seat and Ramnarine was driving.
Chetram Choonilall sustained minor injuries to his chest and was released from the hospital shortly after the accident.
Mr. Choonilall remembers his son as a loving and easy-going young man who was very close to his family, especially his mother.
He pointed out that Deoram was a hard working second year student at the Government Technical Institute.
He said, “Children need to pay attention to what their parents tell them, they need to use the advice given to then to make good judgments in life, to make right decisions.”
Mr. Ramnarine reported that his son, the only bread winner in the family, left to attend his cousin’s wedding with two of his friends from the village on Saturday afternoon.
He pointed out that this was the last time that he saw his son alive.
Mr. Ramnarine said that he was informed that his son, who lost control of his car, was alive when he was taken out of the car, but subsequently died on his way to the hospital.
He pointed out that Preminand, who was a goldsmith, was an experienced driver and had never been involved in an accident before.
The two neighboring families are left to mourn the loss of their loved ones as the destroyed silver- blue Toyota rests in the compound of the Leonora Police Station.
