THE MINISTRY of Public Works and Communications is working to restore the bypass at the Kamakabra Creek area on the Ituni- Kwakwani trail, which was washed away due to overtopping as a result of a swollen stage of that creek caused by recent extreme inland rainfall. Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Mr. Robeson Benn said the Ministry has dispatched pipe culverts and a large excavator to the area, and traffic is expected to resume flowing as per normal by today.
He noted that the RUSAL Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc, from the Aroaima mine location on the Berbice River is standing by to render assistance to restore the old culverts.
With respect to the flooding in Kwakwani and other communities in Region Ten, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Mr. Kellawan Lall has reported that the water was receding, and that the government is engaged in dredging the river, which exercise is bringing relief to residents.
He said too that the government has been able to fulfill its commitment to flood affected residents through the provision of food, medical and agricultural supplies.
Owing to heavy inland rainfall coupled with spring tide many hinterland and riverain communities have been affected by flooding. The Region Ten district is reported as the most affected area since it encompasses Guyana’s three main rivers, Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.
The flooding did not only affect crops and people’s living environment but damaged road infrastructure and Government has been working to meet the needs of the people and restore vital infrastructure.
Government was able to restore the 40 Miles and 42 Miles Mabura creek crossing within four days after they collapsed. (GINA)
