THE ADMINISTRATION has been constructing, reconstructing and rehabilitating roads across the country to boost the transportation network so as to further develop the country’s growing economy. To further enhance the road infrastructure in Region Six, which is primarily a farming district and Guyana’s link to Suriname, the government has awarded the US$8.6M contract to rehabilitate the East and West Canje Roads to H. Nauth and Sons.
The contract for the supervision of the works was awarded to SRKN’gineering and Associates Ltd of Guyana, Coordinator Work Services Group of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, Rickford Lowe told the Government Information Agency.
The scope of work involves repairs and paving of a total of 11.7 kilometres (km) of roadway using asphaltic concrete and 7 Km from Gangaram to New Forest using double bitumen surface treatment. Additionally, eight bridges and 28 culverts will also be reconstructed.
He noted that the period for execution of the contract is 12 months, commencing August 2010.
Lowe highlighted that, “the project is being financed from the Road Improvement and Rehabilitation Programme, an IDB funded loan contract.  It is a major accomplishment that this is the first substantial road programme that will be executed by Guyana Contractors and Consultants with 100 percent local personnel.”
Also in Region Six, Government is currently constructing the Albion Road which when completed will add to the numerous roads done in the district including the 87 km New Amsterdam to Moleson Creek Road.
Additionally, under the Capital Programme for the region, eleven roads have been earmarked to be constructed which will provide access to farming areas and social institutions. (GINA)
