IF one honestly believes that the goal of sustainable development is unachievable over the long term, these people cannot attach any value to their future, since they believe it will all be for naught. I would like to assert that the first step in seeking solutions and moving forward is to understand and recognise the problems we face as they are, and not as we wish they were.
Sad to say, based on reading the daily newspapers on a regular basis, there seems to be a lot of pessimistic people in this country. We are human beings, the most intelligent species on this rock. If we break it, we can fix it. All we need to do is put our minds to work, think and deliver. We can solve any problem so, rather than complaining about our present predicament, why not seek solutions that will move us forward.
I believe that only through continual innovation that human beings can creatively optimise the limited resources that we have.  Nevertheless, in discussing the issue of sustainability, we need to ask ourselves if we wish to live in a highly structured and managed society, why not try to make the change rather than continue arguing about semantics. The bottom line is that we continue to use finite resources as if there was no tomorrow. At this rate there may be no tomorrow quicker than we think. It does not matter how well we have managed to generate wealth. It is clear there is not enough for everyone. As Gandhi said, “there is enough to satisfy everyone’s need but not enough to satisfy anyone’s greed.”
