Victim claims he paid to get bank loan

LEON Harris, 32, of Lot 6 ‘A’ and ‘B’ Cemetery Road, Georgetown, was granted $250,000 bail in a  fraud case yesterday.
Before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, he pleaded not guilty to attempting to defraud.
It is alleged, last May 18, he obtained $775, 000 from Gowcharran Persaud, to secure a Scotia Bank loan for him.

But Harris told the Court he informed Persaud that he has a friend at the bank who would be able to help and took $80,000 from him to help expedite the borrowing process.
The virtual complainant, in turn, said Harris claimed his girlfriend works at the bank and would be able to assist him if he made a deposit of $500,000.
Persaud said he accompanied Harris to the bank where a girl identified herself, took  his money and said he should expect a call from an agent.
He said, subsequently, Harris called him and said he would need $275,000 more to succeed with the transaction. However, later, he got a call from the brother of the defendant stating that the latter was robbed.
The case has been postponed to September 20.
