In Region Two…
MINISTER within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran has admonished food vendors selling at schools to have running water for washing their hands before and after selling. He told public health officers and members of the five Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), last Friday, at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, that the Ministry is currently involved in a hand washing programme being piloted by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).
Ramsaran said the PAHO project is taking hand washing locally to a new dimension but many food vendors at schools are violating the by-laws of the Public Health Department and not washing their hands before or after selling to students.
He said, even in school canteens, the persons vending are not adhering to the by-laws.
Vice-Chairman of Region Two, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, who was present at the meeting, called on public health officers to visit schools more often and make people aware of the by-laws and regulations on the sale of food items, especially to schoolchildren.
