Fraudulent money conversion charge follows soured relationship

Defence alleges…
KAREN Reece, 39, of Lot 71 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, on a fraudulent conversion charge.
She pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said on July 6, being solely entrusted with $387,000, by Malcolm Lancaster, to keep safe and return to him, she fraudulently converted $253,000 to her own use and benefit.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Patrice Henry, for the Defence, said the virtual complainant made the false allegation against the defendant because of their soured common law relationship, following an argument.
But Lancaster insisted that he gave Reece the money for safe keeping and she spent it out with friends but, when he questioned her, she claimed she used it to pay off her mortgage.
However, enquiries at the bank, revealed that Reece made no such payment, Lancaster said.
The woman was put on $100,000 bail until September 1.
