THE PLACE to be last Sunday evening was Roraima Duke Lodge where designers of Guyana Fashion Weekend (GFW) 2010 were in the process of creating spectacular works of art from selected fruits and vegetables grown here in Guyana. At the event, which opened with a word of prayer by Pastor Brooks and a gospel song by Jasmine Harris, patrons enjoyed the ambience of culinary delights and fashion, accentuated with steel pan and instrumental music.
Each group of designers and stylists had their individual space in which to work, taking into consideration the theme of the respective group.
Team Papaw’s stylists and chefs were Sharon Lutchman, Alfred Warde, Jamal LaRose, and Joann Thomas, while Team Pear’s included Adrian Alleyen, Sharon Gittens, and Kevin Singh.
Team Tomatoes was comprised of Deon Tasher and Michael de Abreu, while Team Pineapple was made up of Shawna Fredericks, David Clarke, and Shaundell Gonsalves.
Samantha Moseley, Jonell Cameron, Monique Perdo comprised Team Coconut, Gail Davidson, Natasha Johns and Ryan Berkeley Team Pumpkin, and Kester Hinds, Michael Kellman and Prudence Edwards Team Oranges.
CEO of Guyana Fashion Weekend, Sonia Noel said that this is just a taste of what to expect at the upcoming ‘Glamorous’ event slated for today.
Noel herself presented an impressive black-and-white plus-size collection, while Andrew Harris, the first portfolio winner, presented his new gents line.
The event is endorsed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Minister Robert Persaud was in attendance, along with Minister in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran.
According to Noel, Minister Persaud was all praise for the originality of the concept, saying that it will benefit Guyana.
He also opined that fashion and food was a combination for success, and said he was happy with the emphasis being placed on local food and fashion.
Plans are already underway to make the event an annual one. Winners will be announced at the Glamorous event on for today at the Pegasus at 20:00 hrs at the Savannah Suite.
