Bryan out-rallies Allen to claim 21 years and under title

… Cummings closes out women’s category finals
NIGEL Bryan enjoyed another taste of victory during his accession to the title of champion in the 21 years and under category in Sunday’s round of games in the GTTA’s ongoing Independence Table Tennis tournament as he defeated the current men’s champion Joel Alleyne.
Bryan made quick work of his old rival winning all three of the sets of the encounter with the scorecard reading 11-8, 11-4, 11-4 when it was all over.
This was a redemption match as Bryan was denied this title by Trenace Lowe in last year’s tournament. He also got his revenge on Allen who defeated him in the semi-final round of the men’s category last year as well.
Third place went to Dwayne Gibson who edged Denzel Hopkinson during their heated five-set encounter which ended 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3, 11-8.
Natalie Cummings took the other final that went off yesterday and in so doing became this year’s women’s champion. Cummings parried advances from Adeille Rosheuvel and in what was another torrid clash of talent.
Cummings claimed the encounter in four sets, the toughest of which was the first which ended 16-14 in her favour. She claimed the second set with relative ease but Rosheuvel made her last stand in the third set which ended in her favour but was silenced in the fourth and final set by a rejuvenated Cummings.
The scorecard read: 16-14, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7 at the end of that encounter.
Cummings later paired with Chelsea Edghill, who has enjoyed a dominant run over the course of this year’s tournament, to claim the women’s doubles category. The unstoppable duo took on Trenace Lowe and Lisa Lewis who put up a good fight as the scorecard, which read 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, reflects. Third place honours in that category went to Akeicia Nedd and Adeille Rosheuvel.
Joel Alleyne and Hewley Griffith came back from being a set down to win the men’s doubles final against Nigel Bryan and Warren Hackshaw.
Having surrendered the first set, Alleyne/Griffith intensified their efforts and did not repeat their mistake by taking three straight sets to cap of their victory. The new champions left an aftermath of 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-7 on the scorecard.
Third place went to Dwayne Gibson and Edinho Lewis who defeated Mark Edwards and Patrick Triumph 11-9, 11-8, 11-3.
