PPP/C Government works to uphold rights of workers

I have noticed  in your papers of June 6, that Mr. Lincoln Lewis is again at it.  While I will not deal with his inaccuracies, he is now making a new sweeping charge against the Government of working with employers to undermine the Trade Union Movement.  I quote from your papers,

“Lewis said that what was pellucid, however, was the fact that the Government is now working with employers to undermine the Trade Union Movement in Guyana.”

This PPP/C Government has a proud history of supporting and building the Trade Union Movement and the processes that exist and operable reinforce this.

So far this year this year there have been four Recognition Certificates been issued.  These are for

UNIONS

PRESIDENT

ENTERPRISE

GWU

Mr. Norris Witter

ADL Enterprise

GPSU

Mr. Patrick Yarde

Guyana Civil Aviation

Authority

GAWU

Mr. Komal Chand

Berbice River Bridge

GAWU

Mr. Komal Chand

National Parks Commission

Also for this year, more that seven agreements between unions and companies, for wages and salaries, have been inked.  BOSAI and NAACIE signed their agreement a few days ago.

To those who feel the sky is falling, I ask them to look again.  This government has no axe to grind with the Trade Union Movement in our country and we will work to uphold the rights of the workers, both unionized and unrepresented

Manzoor Nadir

Minister of Labour
