– at Region Four independence flag raising
THE Regional Democratic Council of Region Four yesterday hosted its traditional flag-raising ceremony at Triumph, East Coast Demerara to celebrate Guyana’s independence. This year marks 44 years since Guyana became an independent country from Great Britain.
Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee, in his feature address, stated that prior to Guyana’s independence, the country was experiencing difficult times and he is pleased that 44 years after, it has achieved a lot in the different sectors of development.
He stated that Guyana became independent from the British leadership in 1966 and has since been rebuilding and moving forward.
The minister stated that although the country comprises six peoples, they unite when it comes to building the nation. He urged Guyanese to respect their contribution towards the development of this nation and noted that every country has problems but people must put their shoulders together to move forward.
Minister Rohee pointed out that if Guyana was not an independent country, President Bharrat Jagdeo could not have embarked on a Low Carbon Development Strategy and the country could not have moved forward with its new strategic plan towards economic development.
The ceremony featured cultural items such as prayers from the Muslim, Hindu and Christian communities, folk songs by students of various high schools, poems and African and tassa drumming.
Students gathered from different schools including Plaisance Community High, President’s College, Annandale Secondary and Bladen Hall Secondary.
Regional Chairman, Clement Corlette stated that Guyana’s independence is an important milestone that must be remembered and has led to the development of the nation.
Corlette urged the gathering, especially the youngsters, to cherish their cultural heritage and participate in future developments for Guyana.
