Duo charged with $604,000 heist

AN East Coast taxi driver and a local fisherman were, on Wednesday last, jointly charged with burglary after it was alleged that the duo carted off a hefty sum of cash from a dwelling house. The two men, Imran Sookraj and Amurnauth Mohanlall were charged with the offence of burglary stemming from a report made by the virtual complainant, Neeta Ramroop.
According to police, on Wednesday 5  May  2010, at Coldingen on the East Coast of Demerara,  the duo unlawfully entered the dwelling house of Neeta Ramroop  and stole  six hundred and four thousand  Guyana dollars($604,000).
Representing the number two accused was Attorney at Law, Mahadeo who told the court that his client Amurnauth Mohanlall was gainfully employed as a taxi driver. He also indicated to the court that his client who resides at 116 Enterprise Squatting area, was not a flight risk and he sees no reason as to why the court should not grant him bail of a reasonable sum.  The accused was then granted $150,000 bail by the Magistrate, Shurdell Isaacs –Marcus
Meanwhile accused number one Imran Sookraj, who was unrepresented, in his own bail application told the court that he could not afford an attorney since he is a bachelor who works as a fisherman, and asked the court to consider bail of a reasonable sum.
However, Prosecutor Lloyd Thomas objected to bail for the number one accused, noting that quite often, persons with similar occupations would not attend court, and providing an alibi that their time is mostly spent out at sea.
Nonetheless, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus granted the 23 year old man bail in the sum of $150,000.
The matter was adjourned for June 24, for trial.
