After his apology…
JEETENDRA Persaud, who, in a drunken stupor, beat his wife Devi, was made to remain in a Police holding cell at New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court until the Monday sitting ended.
That was after he had apologized to the virtual complainant, for the assault, in open Court before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, last March 23, the woman was cooking in the couple’s Vryheid, West Canje home, also in Berbice, when the defendant, under the influence of alcohol, returned and found the kitchen door locked but kicked it open.
He then inflicted several kicks and cuffs on his wife, forcing her to flee through an open window, the Prosecutor said.
In his defence, Persaud claimed that Devi brandished a knife at him and he slapped her in the process of taking away the weapon.
The magistrate ordered that the defendant attend counselling sessions once weekly at the Probation and Welfare Department in New Amsterdam.
