After spate of burglaries…
A MEMBER of the so-called faeces gang, suspected of involvement in a spate of burglaries in Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara, last week, escaped capture on Saturday morning. It was the second time the suspect managed to escape.
Dharamdat Surujpaul told the Guyana Chronicle it was minutes before he retired to bed that he heard the incessant barking of the neighbour’s dogs. Noting that it was after midnight, he asked his wife not to put on the house lights and ventured downstairs into his backyard, where he saw the man armed with a torchlight and a cutlass.
Surujpaul said he grabbed the intruder and demanded to know what he was doing on the premises and the villager, who lives some distance away, claimed he was chasing cows that belong to his farm.
But the man was able to free himself from Surujpaul’s grasp and run into an neighbouring yard.
Surujpaul said he drove his motor car and apprehended the fugitive, again, but was forced to release him when the latter threatened to use the cutlass he had.
Having released him, Surujpaul said he made a report to Wales Station at 12:58 h and a statement was taken but the Police said they were unable to visit the scene, not having a vehicle available.
Surujpaul said the same suspect was previously nabbed by other villagers but was able to flee from them.
Last week, the gang members, so named because of their practice to defecate at the location after a burglary, broke into half a dozen houses and stole cash and household items.
The Police have since promised to maintain regular, periodic patrols, in the hope of arresting the thieves who are creating havoc and causing residents to have to stay awake late at nights. (MICHEL OUTRIDGE)
