Part of Government’s plan to deliver efficient, reliable and sustainable services to the Guyanese across the country is dependent on the provision of modernized infrastructure and this was further realised yesterday when the Amelia’s Ward well station was commissioned. The new well station, constructed at a cost of $84M, will be providing clean, safe water to over 5000 households in Amelia’s Ward, Linden, Region Ten.
The commissioning of the well correlates with the Government’s vision to provide sustainable goods and services that would foster development for all Guyanese.
Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali, during remarks at the commissioning ceremony, alluded to President Bharrat Jagdeo’s desire to better the lives of all Guyanese. He mentioned that in the President’s New Year’s address, he emphasized plans and programmes to modernize the infrastructural landscape of the country.
In addition to this investment, Government spent last more than $120M for the improvement of Region Ten’s water sector.
To complement it, between the period 2005 and 20009, more than $600M was spent on infrastructural development for the region’s housing sector.
In the 2010 Budget, and under the second Low Income Settlement programme ,more than $600 M will be spent, creating a further 1000 serviced house lots bringing the total lots since 2005 in Region Ten to more than 6,000.
The Minister updated residents on transformational programmes embarked on by Government to expand consolidate and sustain the economy.
Special mention was made of the commencement of the contract to lay the fibre optic cable from Brazil, the Amaila Falls hydro project and the Low Carbon Development Strategy, all of which are visionary in moving Guyana forward.
Minister Ali further emphasized that the money already invested in the Region and the installation of the Amelia’s Ward-MacKenzie transmission interlink are all tangible evidence of Government’s commitment to the development of the water sector in Linden.
With the well in place, more people will now begin to occupy the house lots in the area, and with more houses being constructed, the demand for housing goods and services will increase significantly, thereby aiding the development of Linden.
Divisional Manager for the Guyana Water Incorporated’s Linden branch, Rawle Friday, indicated that the construction of the well station marks a point of history in the development of the town.
The well will eliminate the residents’ challenge of accessing water as no longer will people have to go after the water, the water would be brought to them.
Residents told the Government Information Agency that they are highly appreciative of the construction of the well and expressed gratitude for the investment the Government has made to assist in making their lives better.
