LOCAL Government Elections will soon be upon us and the Guyanese public will finally be afforded their constitutional right to vote in this process, but this can only be done after a consensus is reached on the reform process that government has been working time and again with the opposition to achieve. The two Bills still before Parliament are the Fiscal Transfers Bill, the Local Government (Amendment) Bill and the Municipal and District Councils (Amendment) Bill and it is hoped that an amicable settlement or agreement can be reached on this so that the long delayed elections can be held.
The parliamentary opposition for quite some time now have been disrupting the reform process and this has led to the subsequent delays in the holding of the elections, but hopefully this last ditch effort by the Government to reach an amicable resolution is successful.
Let us also hope too that if this reform of the local government system actually happens that the parliamentary oppositions do not contrive yet another problem to delay this much delayed process. One can only hope for reason and good sense to prevail at the end of the day when it comes to the opposition.
Government more than willing to work on Local Government Reform
