Girl, one, in same family also hospitalised

Berbice mystery illness…
ONE-YEA-OLD Lisa, the youngest child in the Lochaber, West Canje family struck by a mystery illness earlier this week, has also been hospitalised.
Her mother, Lilamattie Ramdeen, alias ‘Chiney’, who was also afflicted and had to seek medical treatment, rushed the infant to New Amsterdam Hospital during the wee hours of yesterday morning. The woman said her daughter was experiencing bouts of diarrhoea and was admitted to the health institution about 03:00 h.
The sickness previously killed Devi Mangal and left her siblings, nine-year-old Ajay and Devishkar, 7, all of 10 Lochaber, in the same hospital, where their mother received intravenous infusion for dehydration on Tuesday.
The reason the family members became ill is still being investigated, but it is expected that a post mortem examination on the body of dead Devi scheduled for Monday, will aid the investigations.
Meanwhile, medical staff are monitoring the condition of the surviving children and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Mr. Leslie Cadogan, told the Guyana Chronicle that they are under the supervision of a paediatrician.
However, if there is need for any further intervention, the patients will be transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital , he said.
Ramdeen had speculated Tuesday whether foodstuff she shared with her offspring or chemical used to spray a neighbour’s yard was responsible.
She and her reputed husband Carl Edwards were detained when Police started to investigate Devi’s demise and the circumstances under which the girl’s brothers were stricken, but were hours after.
