FOLLOWING the successful hosting of the grudge match entitled ‘Phagwah Melee’ between Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and their arch rivals Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) last Phagwah Day, the ‘Friends of Cricket’ will be hosting a 10/10 competition on Easter Sunday. The four-team classic will feature the DCC, GCC, Everest and the exciting New Line Cavaliers of West Bank Demerara, who will be playing for the winner’s trophy and a handsome cash prize that is yet to be decided.
According to the president of DCC and former president of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Alfred Mentore, the idea behind the 10/10 emerged from the successful hosting of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) sponsored nationwide 10/10 softball competition.
Expected in the DCC lineup are West Indies middle-order batsman Travis Dowlin, national all-rounder Christopher Barnwell, Trevon Griffith and Jamal Hinckson, who recently belted a century off Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) in a GCA second division limited overs competition.
GCC will be looking to Leon Johnson, West Indies middle-order batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, along with Guyana/Stanford wicketkeeper/batsman Tyrell Tull while Everest will feature Ryan Ramdass, Abhilash Dookie, Troy Gonsalves and Leon Scott.
The powerful New Line Cavaliers lineup will come from Gajanand Singh, Andrew Lyght Jr, Paul Wintz and Orin Forde and an exciting and fun-filled day of action can be anticipated by cricket fans who are expected to swarm the Queenstown venue before the first ball is bowled from 10:00 h.
The excitement continues the following day Easter Monday, with the DCC’s usual Easter Day celebration ‘Fun in the sun kite-flying’. Admission is free both days. There will be a well-stocked bar and music will be supplied.
