Detective who escaped terrorists killed in road accident

POLICE Detective Corporal Devane Cummings, 32, of Sisters Village Sideline Dam, was killed in a fatal accident at Nismes, also on West Bank Demerara, last Sunday night.
The policeman, who is attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)
of Brickdam Police Station in Georgetown, had been riding a motorcycle on his way to work when he was involved in a head-on collision with a mini-bus.
Police reported that it happened at 19:10 h when the mini-bus driver drove out of a service station and hit the victim.
Cummings was rushed to West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) and  pronounced dead on arrival there.
The damaged motorcycle, property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), is in custody and the mini-bus driver detained.
Scores of Cummings’ colleagues hurried to the scene of the accident and the hospital Sunday night and, when it was confirmed that he died, many of them burst into tears.
The dead man’s spouse, Delecia Gulliver, who was also in shock, said she last saw him alive when he left home for his workplace.
Cummings previously escaped with his life, on November 26, 2009, when a group of heavily armed men committed acts of terrorism in the city and shot up Brickdam Police Station.
At about 03:00 h, the gunmen, in a gold coloured Tacoma motor vehicle went to Brickdam Station and threw a grenade at Police vehicle PLL 6345 that was being driven into the compound by Cummings.
However, the explosive device failed to explode.
At Cummings’ home yesterday, a sombre atmosphere prevailed as family members described the deceased as a quiet, easy going individual while a tent was being erected for a wake.
Meanwhile, the Police Traffic Headquarters reported that, for this year, so far, 21 persons were killed in 21 road accidents as compared with the corresponding period in 2009 when 25 persons lost their lives in 24 road fatalities.
